Image resizing

Before you place your order we ask that you consider the following to ensure you will be happy with your finished canvas.

Now for the boring technical bit! (if you don’t want to read this bit then please at least have a look at the below pictures).  Now are you sitting comfortably ……then we shall begin……………

The majority of digital cameras take photos in an aspect ratio of 3:4, although digital SLR cameras use an aspect ratio of 2:3 and some cameras can be switched between the two. If you want to avoid cropping (which can result in heads being cut off, for example) then you need to pick a canvas size with an aspect ratio which matches the photo. With this in mind we offer canvas sizes to cater for both aspect ratios.

If you are not afraid of maths:

You can calculate the aspect ratio of your images. Look in your camera's manual (or google it!)for its resolution (e.g. 2048x1536). Divide the larger number by the smaller one. If the result is 1.33 (e.g. 2048 divided by 1536) then you need "digital" size prints such as 12"x16" (as 16 divided by 12 = 1.33). If the result is 1.5 (e.g. 3000 divided by 2000), this requires a "digital SLR" size print such as 12"x18" (as 18 divided by 12 = 1.5).

If you are afraid of maths then let me explain with the aid of some pictures:

If your photo is rectangular and you order a square canvas, you will loose part of your image.

If you have cropped or resized your photo for artistic reasons you may have changed the proportions of your image and this may not fit our standard canvas sizing.  If you do not contact us prior to placing your order to check suitability then we will print as you have order so potentially your finish canvas may look like this:

You may only want us to print a particular section of a photo or you may want to cut an unwanted arm or tree from the edge of your photo, or simply make your photo a different shape.  In order for us to keep our cost low we normally don’t offer an image editing service as this can take us considerable time depending on what the customer requests.  If in doubt then please contact us at studio@brightoncanvas.co.uk before placing your order.
